What is an exhaust hose?
RONTEIX exhaust hoses are made of rubber, silicone, fiberglass, or other composite materials and are an important component of automotive and industrial exhaust systems.
How do exhaust hoses work?
RONTEIX exhaust hoses are flexible hoses designed to convey exhaust gases, accommodate movement, absorb vibrations, and extract industrial exhaust gases.
- Conveying High-Temperature Exhaust: Transports exhaust gases, smoke, fumes, hot air, and combustion gases produced by the engine to the exterior of the equipment or to a connecting system.
- Absorbs vibration and thermal expansion: As a flexible connection section, it prevents vibration from being transmitted to the hull or chassis, thereby reducing noise.
- Reduces assembly difficulty: Bends around obstacles to prevent jamming.

How to Make an Exhaust Hose?
RONTEIX exhaust hoses are manufactured using hydraulic, extrusion, or mandrel forming processes to enhance precision and reduce costs.
Flex Joint
Aluminum exhaust hoses are primarily used as flexible joints and are installed between the engine exhaust manifold and the aftertreatment system. They are mass-produced through hydroforming and mechanical forming.
Turbocharger Intake System
In turbocharged intake systems, silicone exhaust hoses and rubber exhaust hoses are manufactured through an extrusion process, with a reinforcement layer of braided aramid fibers or polyester yarn, followed by an outer layer applied via extrusion.
Low-Temperature Section Connections
For connections in the low-temperature section of an exhaust system, rubber exhaust hoses are manufactured by sequentially wrapping an inner rubber layer, a reinforcing layer, and an outer rubber layer around a metal mandrel, followed by wrapping with a water-resistant fabric and vulcanization.

How Do You Maintain an Exhaust Hose?
Periodic visual and physical inspections: Check for external damage, inspect connection points, and perform bend tests
Cleaning: Remove surface contaminants, treat rust promptly, and protect against gravel and salt.
Operating Precautions: Avoid exposure to water, drive smoothly, and allow the engine to warm up thoroughly before operating under heavy loads.
Leak Detection: Auditory inspection, soapy water test, and odor inspection.
Scheduled Maintenance: The engine requires a comprehensive inspection every 10,000–15,000 hours of operation. A system inspection should be performed once a year.
Boat Exhaust Hose Replacement
- First, remove the old exhaust hoses using a heat gun, hair dryer, or utility knife.
- Second, cut the hose to the appropriate length for the layout, then use a heat gun to soften the ends so they fit the water tank and the stern.
- Third, apply lubricant to the inside of the hose and the outside of the fitting.
- Fourth, after fitting the connector, secure it with double clamps and adjust the screws to prevent the hoses from wrinkling or leaking.

Exhaust Hoses v.s. Exhaust Pipes

RONTEIX exhaust pipes are primarily made of metal materials such as stainless steel or aluminum and serve as rigid conduits that carry exhaust gases generated by the engine to the components of the exhaust system.
- In terms of flexibility, exhaust hoses are more flexible than pipes, making them more resistant to vibration and able to withstand most mechanical stresses. Exhaust pipes can be fixed in channels within the exhaust system that define the exhaust path.
- In terms of maintenance, our exhaust hoses are easier to replace and install, though they are slightly less durable than pipes.
- In terms of weight, exhaust hoses are lighter than pipes and have less impact on load-bearing capacity.
- In terms of thermal expansion, exhaust pipes are more prone to expansion at high temperatures, while hoses provide flexible compensation at the connection points. This helps prevent problems such as pipe slippage and air leaks.
Exhaust hoses are suitable for applications where engine vibration is significant, installation space is limited, and frequent disassembly and reassembly are required.
Exhaust pipes are suitable for applications involving long-distance, fixed exhaust systems that require high structural rigidity and must withstand external mechanical loads.
Exhaust Hoses v.s. Radiator Hoses

RONTEIX exhaust hoses are part of the exhaust system and are responsible for discharging high-temperature exhaust gases.RONTEIX radiator hoses are part of the cooling system and are used to circulate coolant between the engine and the radiator.
- In terms of their operating environment, exhaust hoses must withstand the corrosive chemicals in exhaust gases, while radiator hoses must withstand the chemical additives in coolant and electrochemical corrosion.
- In terms of pressure, exhaust hoses are primarily subjected to exhaust back pressure and pulsating pressure, which fluctuate significantly. However, the absolute pressure is typically lower than that in the cooling system.
- In terms of risks, if exhaust hoses fail, they can cause exhaust gas leaks, which may lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, reduced engine performance, and increased noise. If radiator hoses fail, they can cause coolant leaks, leading to rapid engine overheating or even engine failure.

Testimonials
No, our blue marine exhaust hoses are typically made of silicone or rubber, which are not fuel-resistant. Prolonged exposure to fuel can cause them to swell and become damaged. We recommend using specialized FKM or NBR fuel hoses.
Preparation: Measure the required length and mark the cutting line around the circumference of the hose.
Using a craft knife and wire cutters: Apply a small amount of lubricant to the blade, then cut through the outer rubber and fiber layers along the marked line. Next, gently peel back the rubber at the cut to expose the inner steel wire spiral or braided layer. Third, use wire cutters to cut through the exposed wire. Finally, continue cutting through the rubber on the other side until the hose is completely separated,
Use a hacksaw: push and pull at a steady pace to cut smoothly. Alternatively, use an angle grinder or an electric grinder with a cutting wheel.
Deburring and Cleaning: Use a file or sandpaper to smooth the edges of the hoses.
- For commonly used moisture exhaust systems, it is necessary to select materials that are flexible, vibration-resistant, and easy to install. We generally see police officers using rubber or silicone-based materials.
- In dry exhaust systems, exhaust gases do not mix with water, making stainless steel hoses a suitable choice, especially for high-temperature sections such as the engine exhaust manifold or the turbocharger outlet.
- For highly corrosive operating conditions, we recommend using PFA or PVDF, which feature a dual-smooth design on both the inner and outer surfaces, resulting in low flow resistance.
Exhaust hoses typically melt due to abnormally high temperatures, physical contact, or incorrect material selection.
- If the engine’s fuel-air mixture is too rich or there is an ignition delay, unburned fuel enters the exhaust pipe and undergoes secondary combustion when it comes into contact with high-temperature exhaust gases.
- If the exhaust system becomes blocked and exhaust gases cannot flow out smoothly, heat will build up in the exhaust manifold and turbocharger, causing localized temperatures to spiral out of control.
- If engine oil or fuel leaks and drips onto the high-temperature exhaust pipe, it can cause thick smoke and a burning smell, and it can also accelerate the aging and melting of the hose’s outer layer.
Materials and Structural Design
Marine Moisture Exhaust System: Silicone hoses compliant with the SAE J2006-R1 standard must be used; these hoses offer high temperature resistance and excellent chemical resistance.
Automotive Turbocharger Systems: We recommend using silicone hoses with multiple reinforced layers to prevent them from deteriorating and failing due to oil vapor corrosion.
High-Temperature Dry Exhaust System: We recommend using stainless steel exhaust hoses with a double-layer steel wire mesh sleeve.
Installation Method
Use a dual-clamp mounting method, which includes stainless steel T-bolt clamps or torque clamps. This provides uniform circumferential pressure and resists loosening due to vibration.
Vibration and Thermal Management
Secure the system using non-flammable hangers or support blocks; allow sufficient expansion clearance or install expansion bends in the piping layout, and ensure that the exhaust pipe slopes downward toward the engine.
Automotive Applications
In automotive turbocharger systems, exhaust hoses are prone to failure due to thermal cycling and exposure to oil vapors. If you notice unusual noises, visible cracks, bulges, delamination, rust-induced fractures, or perforations, the hoses must be replaced immediately. If turbocharger pressure drops, or if the rubber feels soft, is swollen, or shows internal delamination, the hoses must be replaced with ones featuring multiple reinforcement layers.
Industrial and Marine Generators
Based on preventive maintenance, replacement should be evaluated within 3–5 years.
If the generator’s vibration-damping mount fails, the exhaust hose will be subjected to excessive movement, leading to fatigue cracks. When engine power drops or fuel consumption increases, abnormal backpressure may result from the hose lining collapsing or delaminating. Persistent leaks at the joints that cannot be resolved by retightening or replacing gaskets indicate that the hose has warped due to thermal cycling and must be replaced.
RONTEIX rubber exhaust hoses are general-purpose tubing that is prone to aging and degradation when exposed to prolonged heat and ozone.
RONTEIX silicone exhaust hoses offer excellent thermal stability and weather resistance.
- In terms of service life, silicone exhaust hoses typically last 10 years, while rubber hoses generally last only 5 years.
- In terms of cost, silicone exhaust hoses cost 2 to 3 times as much as rubber ones.
- For marine moisture exhaust systems and automotive turbocharger intake manifolds, multi-layer polyester or steel-reinforced silicone hoses are the preferred solution.
Flow Efficiency: Corrugated exhaust hoses have lower flow efficiency than smooth exhaust hoses and are prone to slight flow resistance.
Flexibility: Corrugated exhaust hoses can absorb axial, lateral, and torsional deformation. Smooth exhaust hoses cannot absorb vibrations, and displacement stresses are directly transmitted to the welds and brackets.
Vibration isolation: Corrugated exhaust hoses prevent engine vibrations from being transmitted through the exhaust system.
Durability: Corrugated exhaust hoses are subjected to long-term alternating stress at the troughs of the corrugations, making them prone to fatigue cracking. Smooth hoses, on the other hand, do not have weak points where they bend, provided they are properly supported.
Installation Location: Corrugated exhaust hoses are typically located between the engine manifold and the downpipe, or near the catalytic converter. Smooth exhaust hoses are found in the mid-pipe section, the section after the catalytic converter, and the tailpipe.
We recommend storing exhaust hoses in a cool, stable environment at a temperature between 10°C and 25°C. Keep the relative humidity between 65% and 70% to prevent mold growth and corrosion of metal fittings. Store them away from direct sunlight and ensure proper ventilation.
It is especially important to note that exhaust hoses must never come into contact with acids, alkalis, solvents, fuel, lubricants, or disinfectants.
- Route the hoses naturally, maintaining the minimum full bend radius to prevent stress concentration.
- Install the hoses in a relaxed, stress-free state.
- After the initial installation, allow the engine to undergo several thermal cycles. Once the system has cooled, re-inspect and retighten all connections.
- Avoid aggressive driving; allow the engine to warm up thoroughly before heavy use; avoid frequent short trips; and avoid driving through water.
- Conduct regular visual inspections, clean gently, and install heat shields in areas near sensitive components.
