SAE J30 R7 Meaning and How to Choose Right Fuel Hose?

SAE J30 R7 Hoses
SAE J30 R9 Fuel Hose

When choosing a RONTEIX rubber fuel hose, you may be confused by the ‘SAE J30 R7’ marking on the hose. I will explain what the designations SAE J30 R6 to SAE J30 R10 mean and help you select the right fuel hose for your needs.

  • SAE30 R6: Designed for low pressure applications like carburetors,  filler necks and connections between tanks.
  • SAE30 R7: Designed for low pressure applications like carburetors, fuel return line, can also be used for PCV connections and emission devices.
  • SAE30 R9: Designed for high pressure applications like fuel injection systems, EFI fuel supply line, fuel line routed externally in the engine compartment. It is EPA certified to a low permeation standard.
  • SAE30 R10: Includes hoses that are submerged in fuel, and this type of hose is used inside the fuel tank and typically on the fuel pump module. Hose is designed with a special layer inside and outside to prevent the core layers from being saturated with fuel.

PS: Most automotive rated fuel products should never be used for marine applications.

How to Choose:

  • By application: R10 fuel hoses are commonly used inside fuel tanks or where they are submerged in fuel. R7 fuel hoses are used for low-pressure return lines, vacuum lines or vapour lines.
  • By compatibility: For lines carrying ethanol-blended petrol, FKM-lined hoses or fuel hoses explicitly marked as E10/E85-compatible are the preferred choice.
  • By pressure: R6/R7 hoses are typically used in low-pressure systems operating at less than 50 psi, whilst R9 hoses are commonly used in engine bay EFI fuel supply systems.
  • By sizes and fittings: Select the appropriate fuel hose based on its internal diameter, original equipment fittings and clamps.

Fuel Injection Hose v.s. Non Fuel Injection Hose

RONTEIX Fuel Injection Hoses
RONTEIX Non-fuel Injection Hose

Fuel Injection Hose: Compliant with SAE J30R9, R10, R12 and R14 standards, fuel injection hose can withstand pressures ranging from 100 to several hundred PSI and is suitable for in-tank pump modules, high-pressure fuel rails and fuel rail connections. The inner tube of fuel injection hoses is typically made of FKM, FPM, ECO or PTFE, and is capable of conveying petrol, diesel, ethanol blends and biodiesel, whilst exhibiting low fuel permeability.

Non-fuel injection hose: Compliant with SAE J30R6 and R7 standards, non-fuel injection hose can withstand operating pressures of up to 50 PSI and is commonly used in carburettors, vent lines, low-pressure return lines and small engines. Non-fuel injection hoses must not be used in EFI fuel systems or left submerged inside fuel tanks for extended periods. The inner tube of non-fuel injection hoses is made of NBR and does not feature a specialised low-permeation barrier layer, which makes it not resistant to high concentrations of ethanol.

Rubber Fuel Hose v.s. Nylon Fuel Line

Rubber Fuel Hose Lines
Nylon Fuel Line

Rubber Fuel Hose: Performs as a flexible connector for short runs near the engine, filter or pump outlet.

  • Material: NBR, FKM, HNBR, CSM and other materials, relatively heavy in weight.
  • Flexibility: Rubber fuel hoses are flexible, allowing them to be routed around engine components to fit into confined engine compartments.
  • Connection: Hose clamps, push-on connectors, crimped ferrule assemblies and barbed fittings.
  • Permeation: NBR fuel hoses have a relatively high permeability unless lined with FKM or EVOH.
  • Applications: Widely used for EFI systems, carburettors, fuel return lines, vapour lines and as aftermarket replacements.
  • Service Life: Service life is 5–8 years, and standard rubber fuel hoses may crack or swell upon contact with ethanol-blended fuel.

Nylon Fuel Line: A fuel hose offering superior control over fuel vapour permeation, widely used in original equipment chassis routing.

  • Material: PA11 and PA 12, often multi-layer co-extruded nylon fuel lines are designed with EVOH barrier layer for lower permeation.
  • Flexibility: Low flexibility, typically used in semi-straight sections or as pre-formed hoses.
  • Connection: quick connectors, hot preformed end+barbed fittings and push-lock connectors.
  • Permeation: Nylon material and EVOH layers ensure low permeation.
  • Applications: Widely used for OEM underbody fuel lines, EVAP lines and tank-to-engine routing.
  • Service Life: Approximately 15 years, prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light may cause it to age.

Fuel Filler Hose vs. Fuel Feed Hose

Fuel Filler Hose
Fuel Feed Hose

Fuel Filler Hose: Fuel filler hose is used to convey fuel from the fuel filler neck to the fuel tank, which has a large internal diameter, typically ranging from 1.25 to 2.5 inches (32–64 mm). Compliant with SAE J30R7 and R11 standards, fuel filler hose is only required to withstand the force of gravity acting on the fuel during refuelling and is usually fitted near the fuel filler neck at the underside of the vehicle. It is typically made from NBR, FKM or composite rubber.

Fuel Feed Hose: Fuel feed hose is used to deliver fuel from the fuel tank to the engine, which has a small internal diameter, typically ranging from 5/16 to ½ inch (8–12.7 mm). The fuel feed hose complies with SAE J30 R9, R12, R13 and R10 standards, and is usually fitted in the engine compartment, on the fuel rail and at the fuel pump outlet.

What diameter do rubber fuel line hoses come in?

Common internal diameters for rubber fuel hoses are typically ⅛”, 3/16”, ¼”, 5/16”, ⅜”, ½”, ⅝”, ¾” and 1”. If you cannot find a suitable size here or on this page, RONTEIX can produce customised hoses for you, including internal diameter, external diameter, wall thickness, shape and reinforcement layers.

How can I lubricate rubber hose fuel lines?

When installing rubber fuel hoses, lubricant is required to slide the hose onto the fitting or metal pipe. The steps for using the lubricant are as follows:

  1. Check for compatibility. Unsuitable lubricants may cause the rubber to swell or soften.
  2. Clean any dirt and debris from the surface of the fitting or metal pipe to prevent interference with installation.
  3. Apply a small amount of approved lubricant to the fitting, then slide the hose onto it.
  4. Secure with a clamp and check the joint for leaks.
How much pressure can a fuel injection rubber hose hold?

The pressure required for fuel injection rubber hoses depends on whether the system is PFI or GDI, and is also related to the hose’s construction, wall thickness, reinforcement layer and material. If you wish to confirm the hose’s working pressure and burst pressure before purchasing, please contact us for confirmation.

Can I use a rubber hose for a high pressure fuel line?

Some rubber hoses may be used in high-pressure fuel lines, provided they have the appropriate pressure rating and relevant certification. Ordinary rubber fuel hoses must not be used in high-pressure systems, as their pressure resistance is insufficient, which could lead to the hose rupturing or coming loose.

Can I replace the nylon fuel hose with rubber?

When rubber fuel hoses are used for low-pressure return lines or electronic fuel injection supply lines, they may be used as a replacement for nylon fuel hoses. Rubber fuel hoses may also be used as a flexible connection between rigid nylon tubing and the fuel pump.

The following are situations in which rubber fuel hoses cannot replace nylon fuel hoses:

  1. In high-pressure direct injection systems, standard rubber hoses must not be used as a substitute for specialised high-pressure hoses.
  2. Rubber fuel hoses cannot be connected to quick-connect fittings unless a tower-type connector and a clamp are used.
  3. Rubber fuel hoses cannot replace long sections of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) nylon underbody fuelling lines, as this would increase the risk of leakage and wear.
Can I use a rubber hose for a fuel line?

Yes. For automotive fuel lines, a hose labeled SAE J30 fuel hose is required. Ordinary rubber hoses will soften, crack and swell when exposed to petrol, diesel and ethanol-blended fuels.

Rubber hoses used for fuel lines must be compatible with petrol, diesel and ethanol-blended fuels, whose inner rubber layer is generally made of NBR, FKM or other oil-resistant materials. Rubber hoses used for conveying fuel must comply with standards such as SAE J30 or ISO 19013, and their operating pressure and temperature ranges must be suitable for the actual operating conditions.

Can I replace the steel fuel line with a rubber hose?

Situations where substitution is permitted:

  1. Return or vent lines, and low-pressure fuel supply lines
  2. Locations where the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) has used flexible rubber hoses
  3. Hoses that comply with the SAE J30R7/R9/R10 standard, are capable of withstanding the pressure in the relevant line, and are compatible with fuel.

Situations where substitution is not permitted:

  1. Rubber hoses can’t replace steel fuel lines in high-pressure electronic fuel injection systems.
  2. Rubber hoses must not be used in areas prone to wear and tear, or where they are subject to impact from stones or compression.
  3. Areas in close contact with the exhaust pipe or the engine surface, as radiant heat may cause rapid temperature rises, leading to ageing and rupture of the rubber hose.
Where to buy rubber fuel hose?

RONTEIX specialises in the customisation and wholesale of high-quality rubber fuel hoses at competitive prices. If you wish to purchase rubber fuel hoses in a range of specifications, please visit ronteixauto.com.

What fuel hose is ethanol resistant?

Standard NBR material is not resistant to ethanol-blended petrol. Fuel hoses with an inner lining of FKM/Viton that comply with SAE J30 R9 are resistant to high-ethanol fuels such as E85.

Does anyone know where to get a really flexible fuel hose?

Standard rubber fuel hoses may deform, become flattened or experience restricted flow when subjected to tight bends or specific angles. Here are some recommendations:

  1. Use moulded fuel hoses with specific shapes. RONTEIX can customise moulded rubber fuel hoses to specific shapes and dimensions, preventing restricted flow when the hose is bent
  2. Use a rubber fuel hose with greater flexibility. However, more flexible hoses have reduced reinforcement layers and wall thickness, making them unsuitable for high-pressure fuel delivery.
  3. Use a rubber fuel hose kit with hose barb elbows to prevent excessive bending of the hose.
